The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has issued a positive update regarding the power generation situation at the critical Hwange Power Station.

In a significant development aimed at alleviating recent power shortages, ZESA has confirmed that Hwange units 1, 2, and 3 are now back online and collectively contributing 212 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.

Engineers are currently in the process of ramping up output from Unit 3, and the combined generation from these three units is projected to reach a more substantial 260 MW in the near term.

Adding to this positive momentum, ZESA announced the successful completion of all necessary safety and performance tests on Hwange Unit 4 following recent repair works. This crucial unit is scheduled to be reconnected to the national grid later today, further bolstering the country’s power supply.

The return of Unit 4 is expected to significantly improve the overall stability and capacity of the electricity network, providing much-needed relief to consumers and businesses alike.

While the news regarding the returning units is encouraging, ZESA also provided an update on Hwange Unit 6, which is currently offline. However, the power utility has assured the nation that efforts are underway to bring this unit back into service, with an anticipated return date of May 27, 2025.

The eventual reinstatement of Unit 6 will further enhance Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity and contribute to a more reliable and consistent electricity supply across the country. This series of developments at the Hwange Power Station offers a promising outlook for improved power availability in the coming weeks.
