The Zimbabwean government’s rural electrification program is bringing positive change to communities nationwide. Masvingo North Resettlement Area is the latest beneficiary, with public facilities like Zvido Primary School now receiving electricity.
This initiative is a welcome development for residents. Villagers believe it’s a crucial step forward, with potential benefits for agriculture, access to technology (ICTs), and improved healthcare.
Locals expressed their appreciation for the program’s focus on rural areas. Electrification in schools will bridge the digital gap between rural and urban education. Additionally, residents hope the program will eventually allow them to connect electricity to their homes, boosting agricultural activities.
Honourable Brian Mudhumi, the area’s legislator, highlighted the government’s commitment to inclusive development through access to essential services. The electrification program is a major milestone in transforming this region, particularly for its many residents who rely on agriculture.
The Rural Electrification Fund (REF) is dedicated to ensuring nationwide coverage. Their mission is to swiftly and fairly provide modern energy access to all rural areas. This initiative aims to empower villagers economically and contribute to the overall development of these communities. The REF is expanding the grid network while also installing solar power systems in areas unlikely to receive grid connection soon. This aligns with the government’s vision of leaving no one behind.
The government’s National Energy Policy (NEP), launched in 2012, emphasizes connecting rural communities and institutions to the national grid. Solar energy is also being promoted as an alternative solution.
