An independent power producer, Zimbabwe Solar Energy Company (ZISEC), is set to launch a pilot project in Harare’s Glen View suburb. The initiatives involves renting rooftops of residential homes to install solar panels for power generation, which will be sold to ZESA to contribute to the national grid.

Supported by President Mnangagwa, the government and ZESA, the scheme aims to address electricity challenges and reduce load shedding in the targeted area. Under the contractual agreements, the investor will recover their investment over time while ensuring a reasonable profit.

During a meeting with Glen View residents, PGI chairman Dr. Paul Tungwarara explained the project’s objectives and sought community feedback. The plan includes training locals for solar system installation to create job opportunities and incentivising landlords for their contribution to national electricity generation.

With residents’ approval, the project is expected to commence soon, targeting around 400 houses initially. This Presidential Solar Scheme is a collaborative effort between ZISEC and Prevail Group International with a focus on utilising renewable energy sources to enhance power supply reliability in the designated region.
