In a remarkable display of environmental stewardship, a Zimbabwean mine has transformed a former mine dump into a thriving solar farm. This innovative project not only generates clean energy but also demonstrates the potential for land reclamation and responsible waste management practices within the mining industry. The mining company’s initiative to convert a waste dump site into a solar farm that now powers a gold mining entity in Bubi District, Matabeleland North Province is commendable.

The solar farm consists of 8,064 solar panels, 36 inverters, and four transformers capable of producing 4.4 megawatts (MW) of clean electricity. This substantial generation capacity allows the Turk Mine to operate effectively during the day reducing its reliance on the national grid, fostering energy independence and reducing strain on conventional power sources.

The rehabilitation of the old tailings dam, which covered 3.6 hectares, demonstrates the positive impact of responsible mining practices and environmental stewardship. By repurposing the waste dump site into a solar farm, the mining company has not only mitigated environmental risks but also contributed to the local community by providing clean energy.

This project serves as a testament to the potential benefits of accelerating environmental rehabilitation efforts in the mining industry. It showcases how mining entities can positively impact their surroundings by implementing sustainable practices and investing in renewable energy solutions.
