The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) recently issued a stern warning to unlicensed liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) traders, emphasising the importance of consumer protection and safety. ZERA’s actions stem from concerns about the proliferation of unlicensed LPG traders who operate without the necessary permits and safety measures, posing a significant risk to public safety.

Previously, ZERA’s Chief Executive Officer, Engineer Eddington Mazambani has stated that “We have observed an alarming increase in the number of unlicensed LPG traders operating in the country. These individuals are putting the lives of consumers at risk by not adhering to safety regulations and standards.”

In a bid to protect consumers and ensure the safe handling and distribution of LPG, the regulatory body has intensified its crackdown on unlicensed LP gas traders.

ZERA’s actions are driven by the recognition that LPG, while a convenient and versatile energy source, also carries inherent risks if not handled properly. Unlicensed traders often lack the necessary training, equipment and safety protocols to handle LPG safely, increasing the likelihood of accidents and endangering the lives of both consumers and those around them.

The use of substandard or unsafe LPG cylinders poses a further threat, as these cylinders may not meet the necessary safety standards and are more prone to leaks and explosions. Unlicensed traders may also engage in practices that compromise the quality of the LPG, such as mixing it with other substances to increase profits.

ZERA’s crackdown involves regular inspections and audits of LP gas retailers and wholesalers as well as public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the dangers of buying LPG from unlicensed traders. The authority also works closely with law enforcement agencies to apprehend and prosecute those operating illegally.

The importance of LPG distributors being registered with ZERA cannot be overstated. Registered operators are subject to regular inspections and must adhere to strict safety regulations, ensuring that they possess the necessary expertise and facilities to handle LPG responsibly. They also use only high-quality, certified LPG cylinders and adhere to proper filling and storage procedures.

Consumers play a crucial role in ZERA’s efforts to combat unlicensed LP gas traders. By purchasing LPG only from registered and licensed distributors, consumers can significantly reduce the risk of accidents and ensure that they are receiving a safe, high-quality product.

Members of the public are also encouraged to report to ZERA any suspected unlicensed LPG trading activities to the authority.

ZERA’s commitment to consumer protection and safety extends beyond LPG. The authority regulates the entire energy sector in Zimbabwe, ensuring that all energy products and services meet the highest standards of safety and quality. This commitment is essential for building a more sustainable and prosperous Zimbabwe.
