Green Fuel Zimbabwe, a joint venture with the Zimbabwean Agricultural and Rural Development Authority (ARDA) established in 2009, stands as the nation’s leading ethanol producer, demonstrating a profound commitment to transforming and improving communities through sustainable energy. Operating two state-of-the-art sugarcane farming estates, the company has consistently proven its foundational purpose: fostering economic growth and social development. Green Fuel has created direct employment for over 3,000 Zimbabweans and injected millions of dollars into local development, agriculture, and entrepreneurial projects, significantly benefiting surrounding communities.
Founded by Billy Rautenbach, Green Fuel’s operations span the Chisumbanje and Middle Sabi Estates, where advanced irrigation systems ensure water-wise farming practices. The company employs efficient 8000 Series CASE Mechanical Harvesters from Brazil to optimize the harvesting process for superior yields. Remarkably, 60% of the plant’s components are manufactured locally by Green Fuel’s engineering team under the close supervision of Brazilian experts, actively promoting local skills development and industrial growth.
Since its commissioning in 2010, the plant has not only established expansive sugarcane farming estates and a robust irrigation scheme but has also immensely benefited the community through its comprehensive Social Responsibility program, known as Vimbo – ‘Hope for a Better Future’. This initiative has spearheaded sustainable community projects focused on Sustainable Development, Education, and Social Equities. A key achievement includes ensuring widespread access to clean water through the installation of solar-powered pumps and community boreholes across the Chisumbanje and Middle Sabi areas.
Furthermore, Green Fuel has significantly improved educational and social welfare. It has established sewing workshops, such as Manna Creative Fashions and Dermal Care, which focus on producing reusable sanitary wear, promoting hygiene and dignity for girls and women. The company also sponsors 100 children through its Ramangwana Rakajeka Bursary. In sports, Green Fuel has invested in building a modern sporting arena, fostering community unity and inter-school engagement through athletic events.
Beyond its core business of ethanol production, Green Fuel has become a vital catalyst for development in the Chisumbanje community. It stands as a beacon of hope for schoolchildren, illuminating pathways to education, and a source of livelihood for fathers employed, striving to provide for their families. Through its sustainable energy practices and robust community engagement, Green Fuel has undeniably enabled improved, sustainable living conditions for the communities it serves.
