Huge strides are being made towards fostering inclusive energy access and sustainable rural development, as the Rural Electrification Fund (REF) proudly commissioned the Chiwenga Community Mini-Grid Project in Muzarabani. This initiative, featuring a robust 45kW solar mini-grid, is set to revolutionize the lives of hundreds by providing clean, reliable electricity to Chiwenga Secondary School, Chiwenga Clinic, and 21 local businesses.
The project was officially handed over by the Minister of Energy and Power Development, Hon. J. Moyo, in a symbolic Switch-On Ceremony held in Muzarabani. The Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to ensuring that everyone gets to experience and feel the nation’s development trajectory, particularly through access to modern energy services.
The newly commissioned solar mini-grid at Chiwenga is a catalyst for socio-economic upliftment. For Chiwenga Secondary School, reliable electricity means extended study hours, access to digital learning resources, and improved infrastructure for laboratories and computer rooms. This will undoubtedly enhance the quality of education and open up new opportunities for students, equipping them with essential skills for the modern world.
The Chiwenga Clinic will also experience a dramatic improvement in its services. Consistent power supply will enable the proper storage of medicines and vaccines, facilitate the use of essential medical equipment, and allow for extended operating hours, ultimately improving healthcare delivery for the entire community.
Furthermore, the 21 local businesses connected to the mini-grid are poised for significant growth. From small retail shops to budding enterprises, access to reliable electricity will reduce operational costs, boost productivity, and enable the introduction of new services and products. This, in turn, will stimulate the local economy, create employment opportunities, and enhance the overall standard of living in Chiwenga.
The Chiwenga Community Mini-Grid Project shows the REF’s ongoing efforts to diversify energy sources and embrace renewable technologies in Zimbabwe’s rural areas. It aligns perfectly with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1), which prioritizes the provision of reliable and low-cost energy access.
