Grid Africa, a Pan-African distributed energy developer, and TCL Solar, a global leader in photovoltaic technology, have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate energy access across Zimbabwe and Zambia. This collaboration aims to deploy innovative distributed energy solutions, leveraging advanced solar and battery storage technologies to rapidly enhance regional energy security and stimulate economic development in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Recognizing the pressing energy deficit in the region, the partnership seeks to bypass traditional infrastructure development by implementing readily available and rapidly deployable distributed solutions. Grid Africa CEO Norman Moyo emphasized the opportunity to “reverse engineer our over-reliance on utilities” by utilizing existing transmission and distribution networks. He drew parallels to the telecommunications revolution with GSM technology, suggesting a similar paradigm shift is possible in the energy sector.

Both Zimbabwe and Zambia possess robust transmission and distribution infrastructure, and recent regulatory reforms have streamlined grid access, creating a favourable environment for the swift deployment of distributed energy systems. TCL Solar brings its global expertise in high-efficiency solar modules and a commitment to Africa’s energy transition to this initiative.

TCL Solar’s GM for MEA, Tian, highlighted the optimization of their module design specifically for the high-temperature and high-irradiation conditions prevalent in Zimbabwe and Zambia. By incorporating advanced TOPCon passivation structural technology, improved thermal resistance, and enhanced power generation capacity, TCL Solar aims to provide tailored and efficient solutions for the region.

TCL Solar has pledged significant resource support towards deploying 100 MW of distributed energy solutions in Zimbabwe and Zambia. This commitment includes meticulous coordination of supply chain logistics to ensure rapid and seamless implementation of projects.

The evolving regional energy landscape, marked by increased trading activity and a strengthening Southern Africa Power Pool, presents a unique opportunity to leapfrog traditional infrastructure development. This partnership between Grid Africa and TCL Solar intends to transform the current energy crisis into a catalyst for innovation, delivering immediate benefits to stakeholders and establishing a foundation for a resilient and sustainable energy future across Sub-Saharan Africa.

TCL Solar, backed by the integrated advantages of TCL Group, TCL Zhonghuan, and SunPower technologies, is focused on providing high-value photovoltaic products and comprehensive green energy solutions, prioritizing the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and continuous technological innovation in the photovoltaic sector.
