The nation is advised of a new project aimed at increasing domestic electricity access and boosting the nation’s economy. A joint venture between power utility ZESA Enterprises (Pvt) Ltd. and a Management Services Company will see a US$25 million transmission cable manufacturing plant established in Harare.
This initiative, approved by Cabinet, is expected to deliver several benefits:
- Reduced reliance on imports: By manufacturing power cables locally, Zimbabwe will lessen its dependence on foreign imports, ensuring a more reliable supply for grid expansion and maintenance.
- Technology transfer and expertise: The project will facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills to ZESA staff, empowering them with the ability to manufacture and maintain essential power infrastructure.
- Economic ripple effects: The plant is anticipated to create significant employment opportunities for Zimbabweans. Additionally, local copper mines will have a guaranteed market for their product, feeding into the cable production process.
- GDP growth: The project is expected to contribute to Zimbabwe’s economic growth through increased domestic sales of cables and related products. Furthermore, the potential for exporting these goods creates an opportunity for additional revenue generation.
This announcement comes amidst ongoing efforts by the Zimbabwean government to improve the country’s energy sector. The project is a positive step towards ensuring reliable and affordable electricity access for the nation, while simultaneously stimulating economic development.
