The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) signed a landmark power purchase agreement with SkyPower Global at the World Future Energy Summit in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This agreement marks a significant milestone in the development of the “Green Giant” project, a massive solar energy initiative with a projected capacity of 500 megawatts (MW).
The signing ceremony was overseen by prominent figures including Zimbabwe’s Minister of Energy and Power Development, Edgar Moyo, and the country’s Ambassador to the UAE, Lovemore Mazemo. Representing ZETDC was acting managing director Engineer Abel Gurupira, while the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority was represented by chairman Mr Mazambani Edington Tapera.
Minister Moyo hailed the agreement as a testament to Zimbabwe’s dedication to fostering a climate that attracts investments in renewable energy technologies. He emphasized the project’s role in strengthening the nation’s energy security, achieving self-sufficiency, and transitioning towards a green economy. He traced the origins of this transformative partnership back to a Memorandum of Understanding signed with SkyPower at COP27 in Sharm el Sheikh, solidifying a shared commitment to a sustainable and prosperous future.
SkyPower President and CEO Kerry Adler underscored the project’s critical role, stating their pride in kicking off the Green Giant project’s initial phases at such a prestigious summit. He described the partnership as an embodiment of SkyPower’s dedication to promoting sustainable energy development across the globe. Upon completion, the project is anticipated to stand as a symbol of Zimbabwe’s commitment to both renewable energy and economic growth.
ZETDC’s acting managing director, Engineer Gurupira, expressed the momentous nature of this agreement for Zimbabwe, signifying the country’s unwavering commitment to transforming its energy sector and ensuring reliable power for its citizens. He further highlighted how the project aligns with President Mnangagwa’s vision of enhancing energy sustainability through collaborations with world-class renewable energy companies like SkyPower.
The Green Giant project is expected to deliver significant economic benefits for Zimbabwe, creating thousands of jobs while fostering vital infrastructure development. Additionally, the project aligns with global efforts towards achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and improving the quality of life for millions of Zimbabweans.
